We had family in town the past weekend, so of course we induced in touristy activities. My mom lives in Chicago, which is only an eight hour drive so she visits fairly often. We try to pick out a few new adventures to do each visit and this time we decided to head to Niagra Falls.
Rusty, the kids, and I visited Niagara Falls when my sister was in town a few months ago – find that post here – but we did not take the boat ride over to the falls that time, so we were excited to try that out this time.
If you are coming from the U.S. side, the boat ride is called “The Maid of the Mist.” I’m sure most of you can recall that from Bruce Almighty. If you are on the Canadian side, like we were, the boat ride is called the Hornblower Cruise.
Here are a few recommendations and tips to help your trip go more smoothly…
1. I recommend you buy your tickets online. The line to get the tickets there was over an hour long. They do allow you to show the tickets on your phone, so you do not need access to a printer. Also, I was told that it does not matter what time slot you buy your tickets for, you can get on to the boat at anytime of that day.
2. They do provide a pancho. It kept me completely dry, so you do not have to worry about your clothes, but I would wear sandals or your feet will be soaked!
3. I recommend staying on the bottom level. It seems like the top would be more fun and we were disappointed that the top level was at capacity, but the bottom turned out to be a much better option because there are glass walls that you can stand behind when the mist gets to be too much, especially if you have small children.
4. The boat ride is very short so make sure you pay attention and stay in the moment because by the time you snap a few pictures in the middle of all the soaking wet commotion, it will pretty much be over.
Overall, I think the boat ride into the falls was fantastic! I highly recommend everyone try it at least once. I am sure we will do it again when more friends or family come to visit. For the second time in a row, we give Niagra Falls two thumbs up!
Clear eyes, full hearts, can’t lose.
